 BASIC  CHRISTIAN  TRUTHS

SALVATION,  HOLINESS  AND

THE  TEN  COMMANDMENTS

The Christian's salvation is given by grace through faith in the LORD JESUS CHRIST. We must continue to lead a holy life. "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, Be holy, for I am holy" (1 Pet. 1:15-16). Without holiness no one will see the LORD (Heb. 12:14).

Christians are no longer under the law but under grace and no one is justified by the law in God's sight (Rom. 6:14; 3:20; Gal 3:11). We receive our salvation, not because we keep the law, but because we believe in the LORD JESUS CHRIST who gives us grace. It does not mean that we can take advantage of grace and commit sin (Rom. 6:15). "Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness" (1 Jn. 3:4). Our LORD did not come to destroy but to fulfil the Law or the Prophets. He declared,

"Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot and one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled" (Mt. 5:17-18). All the Ten Commandments are continued in the New Testament, but the handwriting of ordinances were abolished when Jesus Christ died on the cross (Eph. 2:15; Col. 2:14-17; Heb. 9:8-10; 10:1).

During the Old Testament time the people were unable to keep God's Laws because they were doing it by their own efforts. In the New Covenant God puts His Laws in the mind and write them on the hearts of His people (Heb. 8:10; 10:16). He helps them keep His Laws by putting His Spirit within them and giving them a new heart (Ezek. 36:26-27).

"But when the kindness and the love of God our Saviour towards man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life" (Tit. 3:4-7).
